Regular Meetings

Normally (!) we hold regular meetings in the Parish Rooms in Lower Lane, Chinley, but the regular activities and meetings of the  Chinley and Buxworth  Transport Group have been much curtailed over the last year. Members of the group have nevertheless been able to participate in a number of transport-related online meetings and webinars. Recent examples have included a presentation by Hope for the Future on the future of sustainable rural travel in the High Peak, a meeting which was well attended and included representatives from SUSTRANS, the Campaign for Better Transport and the MP for High Peak.

The Hope for the Future website can be found at https://www.hftf.org.uk and the Campaign for Better Transport’s website is at : https://bettertransport.org.uk/

In March 2021 we contributed to the document drawn up by Rail Future North in response to the DfT’s consultation on the Manchester Recovery Plan, designed to alleviate congestion through the Castlefield Corridor in central Manchester. The final version of the Rail Future response can be found here…

In late 2020 a presentation was made to our group by the Chair of the Manchester and East Midlands Rail Action Partnership (MEMRAP), a campaigning body  which is aiming to achieve the full reinstatement and upgrade of the  former mainline railway line between Ambergate and Chinley. MEMRAP have been raising awareness of this initiative throughout the region, and locally the Buxton Town Team together with the University of Derby have been actively involved in proposals which will be made to the Department for Transport.

There are many aspects of this initiative which provoke heated debate, not least the reprovisioning of the Monsal Trail, and our group does not at the moment take a group stance on the project. If the project were ever to come to fruition, changes at Chinley station would however be essential !

The MEMRAP project details can be found at : https://www.memrap.org

At Chinley station itself, Network Rail are at the moment carrying out further studies with a view to improving access to the station – and we would very much hope that their upcoming report will convince the DfT to look again at using the Access for All Funds for a station upgrade .

Throughout the year members of the group have been actively involved in discussions about local walking and cycling routes, and we are encouraged to note that negotiations are still ongoing about providing a safe walking route to Chinley Primary School from Forge Manor.

As regards the local buses, the transport group is very pleased that the future of the 190 High Peak bus service is for the moment assured
